About the Project
In preparation for the bust, I read “Churchill: The Man Behind the Legend,” “My Early Life,” “Churchill As I Knew Him,” “Chasing Churchill,” “Winston and Franklin,” “Becoming Winston Churchill” and many Finest Hours, the quarterly journal of The Churchill Centre.
I had to use photographs as no life mask was ever taken. Using photographs may not be much of a disadvantage since by many accounts Sir Winston was usually an unenthusiastic model. I used several hundred in one way or another.
Sir Winston’s mercurial face offered quite a challenge. In this work, I tried to emphasize his vision, boldness and magnanimity rather than his frequently portrayed tenacity.
The bust is approximately life-size, 21” high and 14” wide, and weighs 68 lbs.
Information about the base: Vermont Verde Antique® is a dense, beautiful dark green serpentine with white & green-white veining.
